President's
Corner
by Joe Madeira
This will probably be my last President's Corner article.
Unlike some past presidents, I will not continue to write a monthly article.
It is this kind of obligation I want to avoid.
I have thought about my past years with this club. I have
been the software librarian, which has been replaced by the Internet.
I have been the ribbon re-inker, which has been taken over by Don Pianka,
but has been all but replaced by ink jet cartridges. I have been secretary,
and president several times.
I also remember the various places we have held meetings.
We began life meeting at GE French Road, but had to move when the cafeteria
entrance was closed and non-employees could no longer come into the building.
We then met at SUNY Tech. Their rates went up, so we met at a computer
dealer on Oriskany Blvd. We then met at a small dealer's place on Oneida
Square, (now-defunct). We then moved to the Dunham Library, which refused
our request until I personally called a library trustee I knew. We outgrew
the community room there when we had standing room only meetings. The
Whitesboro High School was a good find for us, usually free except for
when the budget didn't pass. We also absorbed the Rome club when they
couldn't find anyone to run things.
I was helped by a good staff, which has changed over time.
It is time for others to become involved if the club is to continue to
evolve. As I said when I began my term, the club is run by a board of
directors, which excludes one-person rule. Things will not change much
unless new people are willing to get involved.
