Byting Remarks

By Jerry Finkelstein

The PC ads are filled with back to school specials. You already bought your son or daughter or grandchild a PC last year and on top of that you've paid for this year's college tuition. No matter, spend - if only to do your patriotic duty to help boost the economy.

One magazine headlines the PC you'll want for the Fall semester. Good for you. Isn't it nice to have someone out there looking after you and telling you what you want. Isn't that the way with all these specialty magazines to tell you not only what you need but also what you want? At times you can't
tell the difference between an informative article and an ad. And the format of the magazine can make it particularly difficult to tell the difference.

It also seems that one of the goals of these magazines is to keep you up to date on the latest new thing in the PC world. This is the kind of stuff that help makes a geek out of you, a neighborhood guru, an elitist when you talk to your pals at the Bagel Grove. I know I'm in awe of people who talk knowingly of BIOS. But then how would I know if they are talking "knowingly?" What do I know about BIOS? Once upon a time I thought I was doing fine with bios, talking of the books I'd just read on Jefferson and Eleanor Roosevelt. At some point some members of our club would try to help out this naiveblunderer, displaying smiles of understanding and more patience than any person has a right to.

The wise and practical buy their new PC machines at a local grocery store. The prices are outstanding, the PC's are stuffed will all kinds of latest hardware. Others, less wise perhaps and pretty much dependent on name brand products, will go for the Dell or Gateway. Some will scoff at this waste of
money and the poor judgments re your choice of components. Ain't that the way?

It's all so American. Spend. Diversity. The haves and the have nots. And the have nots not having for very long. You don't know much? Hang on, become an active club member, you'll soon know more. You can reinvent yourself. It is the American way.
